Hello Dreamers,
Just wanted to take a moment to say Happy St. Patrick's Day! Not exactly an important day, as it's not a stat in most places, but it does have some significance to those with Irish ancestry. The lore behind the day is that it commemorates the death of St. Patrick in the 5th century. The rational behind why you drink liquor on March 17th has to do with the fact that Ash Wednesday, the day that follows Pancake Tuesday and Mardi Gras, marks the start of Lent. Lent, is where an observant has to give up a vice for 40 days, until Easter Sunday.
I do have Irish ancestry in me. My mother's father came to Canada as an indentured servant - a practice from the potato famine when orphaned children were shipped off to the new world to be slaves. Not a happy part of history, but it is history that is to be remembered.
Still, the celebration at my house isn't that exciting. It starts with a green gag gift to my mom (this year was candles) the direct descendant of the Irish in the house. Dinner would be an Irish dish of some description, this year was corn beef, cabbage, and mash with spinach (you go finding nettles in North America). Dessert was a key-lime pie with green food colouring, mostly because it's green.
I got green food colouring and dripped it in some ginger ale for my brother while putting some of it in ginger and rye for myself. Now I'm drinking some homemade Baileys made with half-and-half cream, Irish Creme flavoured coffee syrup, and Jameson's whiskey. With green food colouring!
Yum!
For anyone who missed out on the bar experience, you just need light beer and food colouring to make green beer. So, bottoms up, and remember to drink responsibly and only drink if it's legal to do so!
Erinn go Brah!
Edit Note: Changed mother's grandfather to mother's father. It would be my grandfather on my mother's side.
I always learn something new from you. I hope it was a good day for you and your family.
