You're a Coward

Writer: Shannon SmithShannon Smith

Dreamers,

You think you would be part of the resistance in a fascist state? Speak out, protest, and disobey?

the obey poster

No you will not.

You think you would have hidden Jews in your attic from the secret police in Nazi Germany? No, you would not: you would sell them out, assuming you would even let them in. Not because you hate them, but because you do not want to die or be arrested, nor risk ruin upon your own family.

You think you would be punching fascists in an underground resistance? Even if you knew how to fight, would you be willing to risk jail or death?

Even passive resistance: spying and running secret, uncensored, newspapers, or hiding members of a persecuted class all invite risk of being jailed, killed, or worse. Not just for yourself, but for anyone that you care about.

When you can no longer protest without fear of being rounded up by law-enforcement, beaten, and jailed, would you? Even subversive acts like joking about the leader's hair would get you in serious trouble. So, would you?

Of course not.

Why? You're a coward.

I can say this without knowing you and be correct, for most people are cowards. I know I am one. I am not kidding myself into thinking I would be anything more than a peasant cowering at the sight of the police, just getting by to get by. Even if I don't drink the koolaid.

Seriously, if acting on the right thing would mean being homeless, jailed, beatened, tortured, raped, and killed - you will not do it. It won't matter how gross the amorality is.

Perhaps I am wrong and you are the exception.

Resistors exist. We sing their tales, celebrate their contributions to future freedoms once the fascist state falls. We honour and decorate them for their bravery and perseverance.

Its celebrated because its so rare. Most will go along out of fear, or because they're drowning in koolaid. You will be one of those people saying "I didn't know that place was a death camp! I didn't, I didn't!"

I just read this for the 2nd time. I forgot you wrote that? It's a short story, I 🤔 think. I would join an army or militia to fight for my country, but that's the sad part. Countrymen killing each other both believe they are doing what's right. It's very one-sided right now. There is no clear resistance they are still trying legal means, but they are getting rid of the justices and fbi, our leading law enforcement entity. I don't know if you watched the recent movie called Civil War it seemed like the East and West Coast got together. Movies are a distraction, and evil never sleeps, and they do a lot of work in the dark. Freedom…

I'm not afraid of death. I would answer the call to arms to defeat a Tyrant. We have until January to figure out what went wrong and is there a remedy. We may have just lost another Democracy . I take care of my mother. She is in her 80s that and her home. I love my animals. I guess I understand that I'm just an organism like any other. I have no religious brainwashing, and I would not be taken prisoner. I would fight to the death. But I'm a coward as well. I will avoid this Trauma until I can't.

Replying to

I can't speak for individual people as some will be exemplary. I wrote that when I started seeing a flood of creators and influencers talking the big game of resistance. Most people think they would resist, but at the end of the day, most will go along with it because they don't want to die, or face a fate worse than. Best of luck though. Where I am is expecting an influx of immigrants and refugees. "How to migrate to Canada?" has been a common Google search. Times are crazy, buckle up. Just don't be too disappointed if you cower at the sight of oppression.
